Along with its sister river the Itchen, the River Test is regarded as one of the most famous chalk streams in the World.
The river rises in the upper chalk near the village of Ashe, 8km (5miles) west of Basingstoke, and flows through Whitchurch, Stockbridge and Romsey before entering the tidal waters above Southampton Water. The length of the main river is 64km (40 miles)
It is famous for its high quality fly fishing sites and is so clean that its waters are used to wash the paper used for British bank notes at Overton. The river is fed by spring water passing through the chalk aquifer over varying lengths of time before entering the Test.
